The Bruton and Warhill outdoor track-and-field teams each earned top-three finishes in their respective conference championships Wednesday.

While Bruton’s boys’ and girls’ teams each took third place in the Conference 33 championships, Warhill’s girls finished second in the Conference 25 meet.

Bruton had a combined team score of 178 — the Bruton boys scored 106 points and the girls logged 72 points — but finished well behind Conference 33 champion Maggie Walker, which finished the meet with 508 combined points.

The top performance for Bruton’s girls came from Clara Wincheski, who set a new meet record in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:16.78. Wincheski set the previous meet record last year with a time of 11:23.24.

Two members of Bruton boys’ team earned first-place finishes during Wednesday’s meet.

David Danek continued his strong season with an easy victory in high jump, taking the Conference 33 meet by clearing a height of 6-0.

Bruton’s Daniel Jones won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.41, a .26 second improvement on his preliminary heat time.

The Panthers also set new meet records in the boys’ 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.

In the Conference 25 championship meet, five Warhill girls took home victories, as the Lions earned a second-place finish. The only team to outscore Warhill was host New Kent, which topped the Lions by 21.50 points.

Another multiple-event winner for the Lions was Sianna Ferguson, who proved dominant in the distance events.

Ferguson took first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:05.76, then won the 3,200-meter run in a season-best time of 13:36.11.

Also winning an event for Warhill was Kaitlyn Lassiter, who took first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 51.74.

The Lions struggled in the boys’ competition, taking fifth place with 43 points. Warhill was 10 points shy of fourth place and well behind first-place New Kent, which cruised to victory with 179.50 points.

While the boys’ 4×400-meter relay team earned first place for Warhill, the only individual athlete to take home a win was Brian Stovall, who finished first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.18.
