Girls Tennis Roundup: Grafton Cruises Past Bruton

Winnie ZhangGrafton rebounded from its loss to Mathews earlier this week by defeating Bruton 7-2 at home on Wednesday.

The Clippers nearly swept singles play, but Bruton’s No. 2 Natalie Cross defeated Grafton’s No. 2 Claire Nelson 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 to prevent the clean sweep.

Despite the win at No. 2 singles, Bruton was mathematically unable to win the team match.

The Clippers added a pair of wins in doubles, dropping the No. 3 doubles match to the Panthers.

Grafton (3-2) will host Heritage on Monday, while Bruton (1-3) will visit New Kent on Thursday.

York Downs Warhill

York remained unbeaten on the season Wednesday, as the Falcons topped Warhill 7-2 on the road.

The Falcons earned wins in the top three singles matches, but saw Warhill steal straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. York’s win at No. 6 singles meant the Falcons needed just one win in doubles to secure the match.

Rather than settling for one win, York won all three doubles matches and put the match well out of reach.

York (2-0) will visit Poquoson on Thursday, while Warhill (2-3) will visit Smithfield on Thursday.
