Four Historic Triangle outdoor track and field teams took to the track over the weekend during the 32nd annual Christopher Newport University High School Captain’s Classic in Newport News.
In the Silver Division, which featured Grafton, Hampton Roads Academy and Walsingham Academy, the Clippers earned the best finish of the three local schools with a runner-up score of 121 points. HRA and Walsingham finished tied for eighth with 19 points.
Grafton’s girls short-distance runners earned solid finishes in the meet. Kyla Walker finished third in the 100-meter dash, while Rachel Blitt placed third in the 200-meter dash. Kira Freedman and Burke Schramel took third and fifth in the 400-meter dash, respectively.
The Clippers also put on outstanding performances in the middle and long distance events.
Samantha Wanderer placed first in the 800-meter run, while teammate Maya Caden took third. Sloan Youtsey finished third in the 1,600-meter run.
Grafton’s distance runners finished first, second and third in the 3,200-meter run, led by Meredith Beaver. Freedman took second and Tacoma Mendelsohn placed third.
Walsingham’s Katie Miller finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, while the Trojans took third in the 4×100-meter relay. Grafton finished second in the 4×400-meter relay with Hampton Roads Academy coming in fourth. Grafton took first place in the 4×800-meter run.
Grafton’s Kenya Robinson finished as the runner up in the shot put. Abigail Zuhlke finished fourth in the shot put and third in the discus throw.
In the boys competition, Grafton finished first with 133 points, while HRA came in third with 97 points. Walsingham placed eighth with 21 points.
HRA’s Grant Stokes won the 100-meter dash, while teammate Devone Humphrey won the 200-meter dash. Grafton’s Kyle Mells placed second in the 200-meter dash.
Grafton took two of the top-three spots in the 800-meter dash, with Miles Owens placing first and Curran Atkinson taking third.
Walsingham’s Mathias Cannon earned runner-up status in the 1,600-meter run, followed by Grafton’s Dylan Lorio-MacNamara in third place. Grafton runners finished one-two in the 3,200-meter run as Price Owens took first and Brandon Tackling took second.
HRA’s Jack Teagle finished third in the 110-meter hurdles, one of the best performances by the Navigators in a field event.
Grafton and HRA finished second and third, respectively, in the 4×100-meter relay. The Clippers won the 4×400-meter relay and 4×800-meter relay, while HRA placed third in the 4×400-meter relay.
Tavares Noel of Grafton earned second place in the high jump, while HRA’s T.J. Carlos finished third in the long jump. Carlos also won the triple jump, while Teagle came in second.
Grafton’s Trevaun Walker earned a pair of first-place finishes, winning the shot put and discus throw.
In the Blue Division, which featured Jamestown, the Eagles girls finished in 17th place with eight points. Jamestown’s 4×800-meter relay team of Thorin Jean, Kathleen Yates, Marta Backman and Skye Thomson finished fourth with a time of 10:29.73.
In the boys competition, Jamestown took fifth place with 53 points.
Jordan Turner finished second in the boys 100-meter dash, while teammate Jordan Willis placed second in the 400-meter dash. Darius Reed earned fifth place in the 400-meter dash.
Brian Hoag finished fourth in the long jump, while Stephen Moryl and Matthew Snyder took second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Harrison Merriman finished fifth in the discus throw.
