A burgeoning runner hoping to enter the medical field after college, Lafayette senior Delaney Savedge had numerous factors to consider when making her college decision.

After exploring her options, which included the College of William & Mary and Wake Forest, Savedge announced her verbal commitment to run for Virginia Commonwealth University last week.

Boasting a well-renowned medical school, a strong athletic program and being a comfortable distance from home — while not being too close, of course — VCU emerged as the front-runners for Savedge, who will run cross-country and track for the Rams.

“They had the medical school I wanted, the distance program I was looking for and a coaching staff I meshed with,” Savedge said. “It was the perfect fit, there wasn’t like one big thing [that stood out].”

During an official visit to VCU after Lafayette’s cross-country season, Savedge got a first-hand look at the campus and athletic offerings, while also meeting with current VCU track athletes and coaches.

“I loved the team and campus,” she said about her official visit to VCU. “They seemed like the team for me. [The coaches] were always super nice and [the school was] willing to work with you on your academics and financial needs.”

Savedge, who runs distance events for Lafayette’s track and field program and finished seventh in the Group 4A state cross-country meet, expects to continue that trend at VCU. In addition to cross-country, Savedge looks to race events starting with the 3,000-meter distance and up, as well as the steeplechase.

Assuming everything remains the same between now and National Signing Day on April 13, Savedge said she fully expects to sign with VCU in April and is solid in her commitment to the Rams.
