The Grafton girls cross-country team edged out Historic Triangle foe Lafayette to take first place during the Group 4A East Regional XC Championship on Wednesday.
Grafton finished the girls race with 56 points, which edged second-place Lafayette with 61 points. Jamestown finished 10th as a team with 235 points.
Delaney Savedge of Lafayette took home medalist honors in the race, claiming the top spot in a time of 18:34. Grafton’s Kira Freedman was third in a time of 18:51, while Lafayette’s Brooke Crookston was right behind in fourth in a time of 18:53.
Two more Lafayette runners earned top-10 finishes as Summer Chambers took eighth place in a time of 19:16 and Serenity Chavez placed ninth in a time of 19:32. Lafayette’s final scorer was Emily Beach, who finished 42nd overall in a time of 21:16.
Grafton’s Tacoma Mendelsohn was 10th overall with a time of 19:44, while teammate Sung Park was 12th in a time of 19:48. Grafton freshman Maya Caden took 14th place with a time of 19:51, and Veronica Seguin rounded out the Grafton scorers in 17th place with a time of 20:01.
Jamestown’s girls were led by Kathleen Yates in 26th place in a time of 20:27. Skye Thomson was 35th in 21:01, Thorin Jean took 40th in 21:12, Kylie Devine placed 65th in a time of 22:18 and Madison Winters placed 79th in 23:04.
In the boys race, Grafton took second place with 46 points. The Clippers were barely edged out by Midlothian, which took first place with 44 points. Lafayette finished third with 88 points, and Jamestown was sixth with 164 points.
Similar to the girls race, a Lafayette runner placed first overall in the boys race. Konrad Steck took home the top time in the meet when he crossed the finish line in a blistering 15:08, which was 21 seconds faster than second place.
Grafton’s Price Owens finished third overall in a time of 15:30, and was followed closely by brother Miles Owens in fifth place with a time of 15:51.
Dylan Lorio-MacNamara of Grafton took seventh place in a time of 15:58. The Clippers were rounded out by Brandon Tackling in 17th place with a time of 16:25 and Dylan Comer in 17th place in a time of 16:37.
Lafayette got a ninth-place finish from Liam Bonga, who crossed the finish line in 16:08. Cade Moreno was 13th for the Rams in 16:21, while John Barton placed 16th in a time of 16:32. The final Lafayette scorer was Marcos Piggott in 51st place with a time of 17:44.
Jamestown’s boys were led by Jyrec McCray in 25th place with a time of 16:57, which beat teammate Daniel Napolitano in 26th place by less than a second.
Clarke Agnew placed 36th for the Eagles with a time of 17:19, Rylan Flint was 39th in a time of 17:21 and Calvin Hart took 41st overall with a finish of 17:23.

Walsingham Girls Win TCIS XC Championships
The Walsingham Academy girls cross-country team took first place during the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools XC Championships on Friday.
Walsingham finished the meet with 52 points, which barely edged Norfolk Academy with 53 points.
Frankie Riggs took third place for Walsingham in a time of 20:48, while Delaney Riggs was fourth in a time of 21:02. Grace Vidlak finished eighth with a time of 21:53.
Walsingham’s Kiely Curran took 17th place in a time of 22:56, while Clare Kinney rounded out the Walsingham scorers in a time of 22:58.
In the boys race, Walsingham finished second with 71 points. Hampton Roads Academy finished ninth with 254 points.
Walsingham’s Mathias Cannon took first place overall in 17:00. His teammate Jack Grimson finished ninth in a time of 18:23, while Jake Lobash was 17th in 19:03.
Patrick Murphy finished 19th with a time of 19:08, and Chris Correll took 25th place in a time of 19:39.
Hampton Roads Academy was led by Liam Carr in 48th place with a finish time of 21:52. Avery Cronin was 57th in a time of 22:45, while Ford Silberhorn was 60th in 22:58. Thomas Blanchard was right behind in 61st place with a time of 22:58, and Jack Howard was the final HRA runner in 68th place with a time of 24:01.
