Field Hockey Roundup: Jamestown Tops Bruton in Overtime

Jamestown earned a narrow 2-1 road victory against Bruton on the road Thursday.

Emily Robitaille put the Eagles on top during the first half, scoring an unassisted goal for the game’s opening score. Jamestown carried its 1-0 lead into the half.

Bruton knotted up the game at 1-1 in the second half thanks to a goal from Bri Smith. Neither team was unable to find the back of the cage again in regulation and sent the game into overtime.

In sudden-death overtime, Jamestown’s Abby Smith scored an unassisted goal to win the game for the Eagles.

Jamestown (5-9-1) ends its regular season on a high note having won back-to-back games. The Eagles will await their opponent in the Conference 18 tournament Monday.

Meanwhile, Bruton (4-9) will prepare to host Northampton in the Conference 33 tournament on Tuesday.

Kayla Cooke Scores Twice in Warhill Win

Kayla Cooke scored a pair of goals as Warhill defeated Lafayette 4-2 at home Thursday in the final regular-season game for both teams.

After a slow first half that saw Warhill find the back of the net once thanks to Haley Smith, the game picked up in the second half as the teams combined for five goals.

Cooke scored both goals in the second half, while her sister, Jessica, also added a goal. Hayley Schulz had two assists, while Smith also logged an assist for the Lions.

Lafayette’s goals came from Kelsey Huckins and Meredith Pons, but the Rams could not keep up with Warhill’s scoring pace.

Warhill (9-4) and Lafayette (5-5-1) will now await their opponents in the Conference 25 and Conference 18 tournaments, respectively.

Grafton Routs Denbigh

Grafton’s field hockey team cruised to victory against Denbigh 6-0 at home Thursday on Senior Night.

The Clippers were led by Emma Kirschke, who posted a hat trick while helping Grafton build a 4-0 halftime advantage.

Laurel Nicks, Grafton’s usual goalkeeper, played in the cage for the first half but played in the field in the second half. While in unfamiliar territory, Nicks scored a pair of goals. Her teammate Kaylee Jones also added a goal for the Clippers.

Grafton (10-6) is finished with its regular season and will now prepare for the Conference 18 tournament that begins Monday.

HRA Tops Walsingham Academy

Hampton Roads Academy defeated Walsingham Academy 3-1 at home Thursday.

Sophia Kingsbury scored a pair of goals and added an assist for HRA. Kingsbury’s teammate Shea Davis also added a goal.

Walsingham Academy got a goal from Katherine Erdahl off an assist from Bridgitte Smith.

HRA (2-6) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and will continue its season on the road against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Monday.

Walsingham Academy (2-11-1) has lost back-to-back games and will look to rebound on the road against Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Tuesday.
