Walsingham Academy scored a 1-0 home win against Bishop Sullivan on Tuesday with a little help from Mother Nature.
The Trojans controlled the pace of play throughout the game, taking 10 shots to Bishop Sullivan’s five.
Outside of a Bishop Sullivan shot that clanked off the crossbar in the opening five minutes of play, the Crusaders lacked serious scoring chances.
Walsingham broke through when, minutes later, Kelau Smith ripped a shot that ricocheted off a Bishop Sullivan defender and into the back of the net.
Leading 1-0, Walsingham nearly netted another goal but were shut down by the crossbar. Landon Gero sent a well-placed ball into the box off a corner kick and Eddie Kinney got his head on it, but it bounced off the crossbar and away from danger.
Poor weather, including rain and thunder, entered the area just as both teams were ready to start the second half. After unsuccessfully waiting for the weather to subside, officials called the game and Walsingham was given the win.
Weather permitting, the Trojans (6-4-1) will next travel to Peninsula Catholic on Thursday.

Hampton Roads Academy used a 1-0 halftime advantage to propel itself to a 2-1 road win against Norfolk Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon.
The Navigators got on the board first thanks to a goal from Patrick Phillips that came off an assist from Jalen Johnson in the first half.
HRA and Norfolk Collegiate exchanged goals in the second half, with Jonathan Brownbill scoring for the Navigators off an assist from Sam Walsh.
Leading 2-1, HRA was able to hang on for the remainder of the contest and secure the victory.
The win marks HRA’s (6-2) third win in its last four games. HRA will continue its season at home against Nansemond-Suffolk Acadmey on Thursday.
