The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club at Colonial Williamsburg is helping making golf more accessible to young people.
On Monday, The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club announced a partnership with The First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula, a local chapter of a national nonprofit organization that promotes youth development through golf.
The partnership will allow members of The First Tee to play the nine-hole Spotswood course with a significant discount.
Green fees for the Spotswood course normally cost $26 per player. However, after 3 p.m. daily, First Tee members can play the course for $1 when accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, who can play for $10.
Those taking advantage of the discounted rates will also have access to the driving range and practice green.
Executive Director of The First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula Tom Carnevale said having a nine-hole partnership is good for children, who might not have time to play a full 18 holes.
“The availability of the Golden Horseshoe’s Spotswood every day after 3 p.m. presents the perfect opportunity for kids in James City and New Kent to play close to home,” Carnevale said.
With the partnership, Golden Horseshoe joins Two Rivers Country Club and Colonial Heritage Golf Club as local golf courses that work with The First Tee.
The partnership also made sense for the education-driven Colonial Williamsburg, Colonial Williamsburg Director of Golf and Recreation Glen Byrnes said.
“This partnership fit perfectly with Colonial Williamsburg’s educational mission and provides the opportunity for kids to play a course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., one of the great golf course designers in the history of the game,” Byrnes said.
