A goal with two minutes remaining in regulation gave Walsingham Academy a 1-0 home win against Portsmouth Christian on Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans controlled the pace of play throughout the game, taking 20 more shots than Portsmouth Christian. Despite the disparity in scoring chances, Walsingham Academy struggled to capitalize on its open looks.

Kelau Smith nearly put Walsingham Academy on the board in the first half as he took a free kick from just outside the box that was heading toward the goal, but was deflected away off the head of a defender.

Despite both teams entering the half tied at 0-0, Walsingham stuck with its game plan of controlling possession.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Landon Gero carried the ball down the right side of the pitch and centered the ball. Gero’s cross found the foot of Ryan Dorsett, who booted the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

The Trojans (4-4-1) have won back-to-back games and will look to build on that streak when they host Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on Thursday.
