The Jamestown girls soccer team earned a respectable 1-1 draw against Princess Anne (3-0-1) during Friday’s game in the Virginia Beach Showcase Tournament.

Jamestown (0-2-1) coach Michelle Dawson said her team takes pride in being the only Peninsula and Bay Rivers District team in the tournament.

“This tournament is mostly beach teams,” she said. “We were excited to get the invitation.”

Jamestown is in the Group 4A classification, or one group lower than the 5A classification of many Virginia Beach teams. The Virginia High School League determines classifications based on school population.

Jamestown’s Morgan Connell delivered a corner into the box in the first half. A Princess Anne defender attempted to head the ball away from the net, but accidentally sent it into the back of their own goal, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Jamestown held that 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Maddie Stace of Princess Anne tied the game up at 1-1 with 21 minutes left in the game after receiving a pass to the outside of the defense and ripping a shot past the goalie.

The two teams were knotted up at 1-1 when the final whistle blew. Despite playing to a draw, Dawson was pleased with her team’s effort.

“It was a very good game,” she said. “We had a lot of possession. We had a good amount of control. They one goal they scored was just a pass to the outside and it was only real breakdown.”

Jamestown will play Landstown at 3 p.m. Saturday in their final game of the showcase.
