Warhill senior Kasey Grainer capped off her final year of high school girls basketball, adding to her postseason honors Monday.
After being named Conference 25 Player of the Year earlier this month, Grainer earned a place on the Virginia High School League’s 3A All-State second team.
Grainer averaged 12.8 points, seven rebounds and two assists per game for the Lions, who lost to Petersburg 70-63 in the 3A East quarterfinals.
Coach Bingo Brungot heaped praise upon Grainer upon hearing about her latest honor.
“From the moment she walked in the door she was a leader,” he said. “As a freshman it was hard to get the seniors to follow her. They followed her because of her work ethic. She would work hard every single day and in the offseason. She ate, breathed, slept basketball for the four years she was at Warhill.”
Grainer, who will play basketball for Virginia Wesleyan College, stepped in and competed immediately as a freshman, earning her way onto the starting roster. From there, she never missed a game during her four years as a starter, Brungot said.
For Brungot, the thought of losing a four-year starter and team leader is something he does not want to think about.
“She’s like a daughter to me,” he said. “Thinking about losing her makes me emotional. It’s going to be hard to walk into the gym and not see her face.”
