Four Bay Rivers District schools are among the record 44 that have been recognized as this year’s Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity award winners, the Virginia High School League announced Thursday.
The VHSL’s annual award recognizes member schools that have made sportsmanship a priority and an expectation within the school and community.
There is no limit to how many schools can be recognized — selection is based on whether a school meets a criteria that deducts points for student-athlete ejections, coach ejections and/or inappropriate behavior at state championship events — and this year Grafton, Lafayette, Tabb and York have each been recognized.
For Grafton and York, this year marks their fifth time being honored — more than any other area school — while Lafayette and Tabb were selected for the fourth time.
Grafton, Lafayette and Tabb were each selected as award winners last year.
“I consider this to be the Virginia High School League’s most prestigious award,” VHSL assistant director Tom Dolan said in a release. “It’s the only award that the entire school is graded on.”
