After its opponent was forced to forfeit due to a lack of players, Williamsburg Post 39 lives to see another day in the American Legion baseball state tournament.
Post 39 coach Tom Richardson said Vienna Post 180, which lost to Albemarle Post 74 on Tuesday to earn a spot against the Williamsburg club in the losers bracket, was dealing with a few injuries and that one of its players left for college Wednesday and was unavailable to dress.
With the forfeit, Post 39 earns its first state-tournament victory in five years and will play the winner of West End Post 361 and Leesburg Post 34 at 9 a.m. Thursday, with the winner moving on in the losers bracket and the loser eliminated.
Richardson said he expects Wednesday’s original starting pitcher, 6-foot-5 lefty Kent Klyman, to take the hill Thursday.
