Less than a month after setting a personal best time in the 800-meter race, Derek Holdsworth bested himself once again.
Holdsworth clocked in at 1 minute, 49.07 seconds in the 800-meter run at the U.S. Junior National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon over the weekend to take third place.
In Saturday’s preliminary heat, Holdsworth clocked a 1:48.97 — his first sub-1:49 time ever — before finishing third in Sunday’s finals behind Indiana University’s Tre’tez Kinnaird (1:48.01) and Kingswood High (Texas) senior Myles Marshall (1:48.43).
Though his third-place finish does not earn him a spot at the World Junior Championships in two weeks, it does continue a productive summer in which Holdsworth has continued to shave time race after race to compete among the best runners in the nation.
Holdsworth and his coach, Drew Mearns, are currently considering several options for Holdsworth, who graduated from Lafayette High in June, to continue training with an eye on a professional career.
