Matt Smith and Blake Otey combined to allow one run on two hits over nine innings as Williamsburg Post 39’s American Legion baseball team defeated Gloucester Post 75 4-1 at Warhill High School on Thursday evening.

It was the second consecutive game in which Post 39 pitchers gave up less than five hits. On Wednesday, Williamsburg allowed four hits in a 11-0 shutout over Hampton Post 31.

Smith got the start and dominated Gloucester’s lineup through five innings, yielding no runs and one hit while striking out nine. Otey came on in relief and gave up one run on one hit over four innings.

Offensively, Thomas Richardson finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three runs scored while Austin Carter went 3-3 with one run and one RBI. Michael Brumfield chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBI.

Gloucester jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning before Williamsburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
