York High’s girls tennis team added another “first” to what has already been one of the most successful seasons program history.
A day after securing the program’s first team state-tournament berth with a win in the conference semifinals, the Falcons captured the first region title in school history after defeating Lafayette 5-1 in the 3A East Region final at Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News on Friday.
The victory was the Falcons’ third in the past month against their Bay Rivers District rivals.
After beating the Rams 7-2 on their own courts in both team’s regular-season finale to clinch the Bay Rivers District title, York followed with a 5-2 win over Lafayette four days later in the 3A Colonial Rivers Conference 25 championship.
Friday’s victory was just as one-sided as the Falcons (14-0), who have yet to be beaten this season, won five of six singles matches in straight sets to wrap up the victory.
Lafayette also has reason to celebrate, though. The Rams will also be making their first team trip to states after shutting out Warren County 5-0 in Thursday’s semifinals.
York and Lafayette will both open state tournament play June 9. York will host 3A West Region runner-up Spotswood while Lafayette will travel to Charlottesville to play West Region champion Western Albermarle.
