Tennis: York, Lafayette Girls Advance in 3A East Region Tournament

York and Lafayette will both play for a spot in next week’s 3A girls tennis state tournament Wednesday after breezing past their East Region quarterfinal opponents Monday.

The Falcons overpowered Hopewell 5-0 in under an hour and had not lost one game when the match was called after five consecutive 6-0, 6-0 triumphs by York, which improved its unbeaten record this season to 13-0.

The Falcons will travel to a neutral site still to be determined to play fellow unbeaten James Monroe (16-0) in Wednesday’s region semifinals.

Lafayette also scored a 5-0 shutout over Thomas Jefferson on Monday to earn a spot in Wednesday’semifinals at Warren County on the road.

The winners from both semifinals, which are scheduled for 3 p.m., are guaranteed a berth at states next week. The region championship, which will determine seeding, will be played Friday.

 

Jamestown, Grafton Boys and Girls Bow out of 4A South Regional

Each of the Bay Rivers District’s four representatives in the 4A South Region team tournament ended their seasons with losses in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Grafton’s girls proved to be the toughest out, losing to Glen Allen 5-3 after splitting singles 3-3.

Jamestown’s boys and girls both fell to Hopewell — the boys battled closely in almost every match but still fell 5-0 and the girls lost 5-1 — while Grafton’s boys were shut out by Hanover 5-0.
