Grafton sophomore Jonathan Spires turned in a spectacular performance at the Kecoughtan Invitational swim meet held at the Midtown Aquatic Center on Saturday.
Spires won two individual events — the 50 free in 21.19 seconds and 100 free in 46.61 — before teaming up with Andrew Ferguson, Nathan Kimbel and Tyler Titch to set a pair of meet records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
The foursome won the 200 free relay in 1:26.60, which bested the previous meet record by three-tenths of a second, before shattering the previous 400 free relay record by nearly three seconds (3:11.92).
Lafayette junior Carter Kale also set a meet record in the 500 free with a finishing time of 4:34.77.
The Clippers finished fourth as a team on the boys side, one spot ahead of Lafayette in fifth. Hampton Roads Academy placed third, while Jamestown, York and Tabb finished 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Jamestown, led by Joelle Vereb, Sarah Niewola, Kylie Roehrle and Margaret Williams, dominated both relay events to edge Cox, 236-232, for the team title.
Hampton Roads Academy and Lafayette finished third and fourth, while Grafton and Tabb placed 10th and 11th, respectively.
In total team scoring, Lafayette (331) placed third behind HRA (428) and champion Cox (453). Jamestown placed fifth (385) and Grafton sixth (281) to round out area schools.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Grafton 91 Dinwiddie 20
With leading scorer Olivia Wilson still out with strep throat, Emily Beyer (23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, six steals), Hannah Olson (15 points, seven assists, six steals) and Hayley Marshall (18 points, six rebounds) picked up the slack as Grafton breezed past Dinwiddie on Saturday. The Clippers (10-2) led 39-0 after one quarter.
Bruton 39 King William 29
Alexis Calloway (7 points) and Latoya Wynne (6 points) led a balanced scoring effort as Bruton built a 20-8 halftime lead and held on to beat 2A Conference 33 foe King William 39-29 on Saturday. It was the Panthers first conference victory of the season as they improved to 4-6 (1-0 conference) on the year.
St. Anne’s Belfield 50 Williamsburg Christian Academy 37
Williamsburg Christian Academy suffered its first loss of the season on Friday with a 50-37 setback in Charlottesville against St. Anne’s Belfield — the No. 2 ranked team in the VISAA’s Division 1 poll. Stephanie Seaman led the Eagles (18-1) with 16 points and Charnissa Chillers added eight.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Walsingham 71 Wakefield 54
Billy Barnes scored a team-high 22 points and Braden Sutton added 19 as Walsingham led 45-22 at the break and held on for a 71-54 road win Saturday. Miguel Kissoon chipped in with 13 points for the Trojans, who improved to 8-4 on the season.
St. Anne’s Belfield 58 Williamsburg Christian Academy 56
The Eagles had a good look at a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds, but the shot rimmed out as WCA fell 58-56 on the road against STAB, the No. 3 ranked team in the VISAA Division 2 state poll. Xavier Green led a balanced scoring effort with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Mark Seaman finished with 16 and Ryan Flanagan added nine. Andre Brown had eight points and Mike Duncan tallied six points and six assists for the Eagles (12-6).
