Where We Live: Original details preserve 50s charm of this updated rancher

VIRGINIA BEACH — In a wooded nook near the Oceanfront sits the house at 106 Bay Drive. This three bedroom, two bath ranch style home was built in 1950 and has a white-washed wood and brick exterior.

A bright teal door and crisp black shutters modernize the front of the home and give it an inviting face. Gray slate stones form a pleasant walkway to the front porch.

It’s a classic home full of character and surrounded by towering hardwoods. The wooded lot is staid and homey, and the home nestles seamlessly into the landscape – as if it were just another natural element.

Current owners, Pete and Alyssa Sheerhan, have done significant improvements to the outdoor space over the years. Where there was once a small, murky pond, Pete and Alyssa created a spacious, sloping yard. And now, instead of being fully hemmed in by tall trees, the back perimeter has been cleared and overlooks the greens of the Princess Anne Golf Course.

After a severe storm in 2016 left a large tree on the roof of the home, the couple totally rebuilt and updated the TV room adjacent to the garage.

They have done many other renovations to the interior of the home as well, while still maintaining many of the original elements that give it such charm. Glossy hardwoods, unique iron fixtures, and a wood-burning fireplace still lend their classic 1950s character to the home.

An updated galley kitchen with a farmhouse sink, granite countertops, and fresh white cabinets leads into a formal dining area.

An open floor plan connects the dining room with the formal living room, and both are presided over by a large picture window that lets in beautiful natural light.

In addition to the attractive living areas, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a one-car garage complete this home, which is currently for sale and listed here.
