WILLIAMSBURG — Beginning on March 9, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCAC) is showcasing nine creatives in its Spring 2022 Members’ Co-Op Show.
“It’s something we started five years ago in spring 2017,” said WCAC’s President of the Board of Directors Janis Wood in an interview with WYDaily. “We moved into our new blue building and we thought, ‘We’re going to mix it up a little bit.’ So we became more member-focused as far as providing more opportunities for our members to exhibit their work than we have ever done before.”
The show is made up of artists, photographers, and artisans that work in a variety of mediums and artistic styles.
Each of the nine WCAC members will feature multiple pieces in their own reserved wall, or section, in the art center. This gives the opportunity for the individuals to display fairly large bodies of work while also allowing them to curate their own show.
One of the points of the co-op show is to help support WCAC’s members. Also, to help spread awareness of local art and artists throughout the community. Therefore, visitors will be able to purchase any piece featured at the show.
“It’s seven weeks, which is longer than most of our shows. That’s because our artists are actually paying to rent the space and we want to give them a good opportunity to kind of have the exhibit experience,” said Wood. “We do have artists who are brand new. Maybe they’ve never exhibited before, or maybe they’ve been painting or doing whatever they’ve been doing for a while but they’ve never been in a real exhibit. So this gives them an opportunity to grow and learn, and to help be involved in the process of curating a show.”
The exhibit will begin on March 9 and will end on April 22, 2022. Every week, Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors to WCAC can observe the Spring 2022 Members’ Co-Op Show in WCAC’s Main and Middle Galleries. In the Fireside Gallery, there will be another members’ exhibit entitled “Art Inspired by Song” as well as the Artisan Corner that will feature new works in fiber art, jewelry, ceramics, and other unique 3-D artwork.
