James City County Parks and Recreation Releases Event Schedule for February

JAMES CITY COUNTY — Swimming, ceramics, movies and more are all on the docket for February at James City County Parks and Recreation.

JCC Parks and Rec released its list of February events in which residents can attend. All events below will be held at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd., unless otherwise noted.

Registration for February and March swim classes is open Feb. 14-23, and can be completed at the James City County Recreation Center. A class completion card or swim evaluation card is required to register for next level swim classes. For more information call (757) 259-4185.

People of all ages can attend the free “Splash on Friday” event Feb. 18 from 6-8 p.m. There will be a free swim area as well as a Wibit inflatable obstacle course. Games and prizes will be offered.

Children ages 10-15 can play with clay Thursdays between Feb. 24 and March 24 beginning at 4:15 p.m. Participants can build ceramics by hand and try out the potter’s wheel. “Kidz Clay” costs $40 to register with a $15 materials fee.

Those 16 and older can learn how to apply glazes to pots, including techniques like painting, pouring, throwing and more. The “Glaze Application Techniques” will be Saturday, Feb. 12, 1-4 p.m. There is a $30 registration fee and $10 materials fee.

Children can also learn the basics of Spanish on Mondays, between Feb. 28 and April 11. The class is conducted via zoom, and children will be taught vocabulary of the Spanish language. Registration is free and must be completed by Feb. 22.

Parents and children looking to spend time together can sign up for the “Bonding Beats”  workshop on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. No musical experience is needed to play games and practice rhythm on the drums while bonding with family. Registration for parent-child pairs is $10 with a $5 fee per additional child.

The drums will be used to explore mindfulness in the free “Drumming for Wellness” Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Students will learn the basics of drumming and meditation techniques. The event will feature drum circles and sound immersions.

Residents aged 14 and up can practice meditation and active stretching in the “For the Love of Yoga Nidra” Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. The registration cost is $10.

The Williamsburg Walking Club’s monthly “Walk This Way” will march along the Greensprings Interpretive Trail on Feb. 26  at 10 a.m. There is no cost to join the group walk.

The Sensory Friendly Movie Night is open to everyone for the price of $5 per family, which includes snacks. It will be held Feb. 18 beginning at 6 p.m. Special sensory seating areas will be provided and the lights will be turned down.

People of all ages and abilities can get messy, play with slime and paint with spaghetti during the “Got Goo? Fun & Sticky Sensory Play.” It will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 6:30-8 p.m. Registration must be completed by Feb. 16 and is $5 per family.

JCC Parks and Rec is partnering with The Arc of Greater Williamsburg to present a yoga class to anyone 18 and older who has a disability. The yoga event is Feb. 22 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Residents can get an introduction to pickleball Thursday, Feb. 17 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 10.
