Waverly “Chip” Evans passed away at his home in Williamsburg, VA on August 7, 2026 at the age of 77.
Chip was born on May 9, 1949 in Richmond, VA to parents Waverly “Chet” Evans Jr. and Anne Miles Evans, and older sister Peggy. Chip’s childhood years were spent as a “free range” kid in the Chamberlayne Heights neighborhood. He later excelled as a standout fullback at Henrico High School, playing all four years and being named co-captain of the team his senior year. His gritty athleticism and tough reputation earned him local accolades and a full football scholarship to the College of William & Mary.

While a senior at Henrico High School, Chip’s study hall teacher introduced him to his future wife of 54 years, Donna Metzger. Chip was lucky enough to charm the cheerleader, future homecoming queen and valedictorian. In storybook fashion, the high school sweethearts fell in love and remained happily married until Chip’s death.

At William & Mary, Chip developed lifelong friends with his Kappa Sigma brothers and football teammates. He played for Hall of Fame coaches, Marv Levy and Bobby Ross. He majored in Accounting, became a CPA, and moved to North Carolina after graduation.

Donna and Chip were married on February 19, 1972, and quickly established a family in Greensboro, NC where they resided for 37 years until retiring to Williamsburg in 2008. Chip came from humble beginnings, but retired after being Managing Partner of KPMG’s Greensboro office, as well as Head Partner for a major customer, R.J. Reynolds Tabacco Company.

Chip was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and he cherished his time with his three kids, their spouses and seven grand kids, who called him “Pop”. In his mid-life, he and Donna spent countless hours watching their kids play soccer and making memories with lifelong friends in their Wedgewood neighborhood and beyond. In his later years, he and Donna enjoyed beautiful sunsets on the Rappahannock River, memorable times with family and friends around a dinner table, and countless hours supporting and loving their grandkids.

Every moment of his life, whether it was an important decision, misfortune, or celebration, was lived in service of his family and friends. He served as the ultimate provider, role model, advisor and patriarch of a family he was intensely proud of.

One of the darkest moments in Chip’s life was the loss of his first-born daughter, Susan Mangin, to cancer in 2025. Even with this challenge, Chip rose to the occasion and remained the family’s supporting patriarch, advisor, and role model. Family and friends are blessed with the knowledge he and Susan have been re-united.

Chip is survived by his wife of 54 years, Donna Evans; his children, Lisa Parks (spouse Will), Michael Evans (spouse Taemi), son-in-law Christopher Mangin Jr.; grandchildren, Evan and Rose Mangin, Trip and Hugh Parks, and Bennett, Clark and Josh Evans; his sister, Peggy Sawyer; his brother-in-law, Lin Metzger (spouse Lou Anne); and his nieces and nephews, Tori Buchanan, Niki Parnell, Tyler Metzger, and Ramsi Metzger.
