Nancy Jane Monroe of York County

Nancy Jane Monroe passed away peacefully at home on July 16th, with loved ones at her side.

She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. John Allan and Eleanor Jane Altdoerffer, and was the eldest of three. Her parents and brothers Frederick Allan and John Robin have predeceased her.

Nancy was educated at Youngstown State University after a brief stint at Northwestern and went on to nursing school at Youngstown Hospital Nursing School where she became a registered nurse. Her early work was at Akron Children’s Hospital. She married William C. Monroe of Youngstown, Ohio, in 1961 and they went on to have two children, Elizabeth Jane and William Allan (Jennifer McComb).

Nancy had been a resident of Virginia since 1970 and of York County since 1978. She was a nurse on an orthopedic/neurosurgery floor at Hampton General Hospital (later Sentara Hampton General) for 20 years. Over the years she volunteered with the Girl Scouts of the USA, Tabb Elementary School library, American Red Cross, HELP Free Clinic in Hampton, Monumental United Methodist handbell choir, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church youth handbell choir.

Nancy loved music. She was a classically trained pianist and also played the pipe organ, clarinet, cello, and glockenspiel. In high school, she sang in the a cappella choir and the girls octet. She loved quilts and other fiber arts.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 65 years, daughter, son, and daughter-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be held Sunday, August 2nd at 2 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton, Virginia, where she has been a member since the early 1970s.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
