John F. (Jack) Murphy passed away peacefully at his home in Williamsburg, Virginia on July 28, 2026. Jack was born December 1, 1938 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Vincent and Estelle Murphy.
He graduated from Presque Isle High School, Presque Isle, Maine in 1956, Washington and Lee University in 1960, and earned an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. Jack answered his country’s call and entered the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. After serving in the Army Jack began a rewarding career with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a financial analyst, rising to the position of Branch Chief in the Corporation Finance Division.
Jack was a man of service to others. He spent over forty years volunteering his time in endeavors matching his passions and his Christ filled faith. Examples of his volunteerism included being: a coach for youth soccer; a Statistician for the Montgomery Cardinals, a semi-pro football team in the Mason Dixie League; Montgomery Junior College basketball scorekeeper and football statistician (attending the National Championship games in 1986 and 1990); and an off-ice official for the Ice Breakers, a minor league hockey team. Jack was a mainstay scoreboard operator for the men’s and women’s basketball team at Marymount College. Jack also served those less fortunate. He was a weekly volunteer at the Lamb Center in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition to the Lamb Center, Jack volunteered at SOME (So Others May Eat), Wheaton Boys Club, Cross Links, Brother’s Brother and at numerous Catholic Churches in various service roles. Jack had a deep connection to his Irish heritage. He served as president of a chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Jack was a faithful servant of God, attending daily Mass faithfully. Jack is survived by his loving wife Leslie of over forty-two years, his cherished godchildren Heather and Andrew and their parents Christine and Greg Gaudette and his cousins Emory Keller, Patty Witalis, Nancy Hall, Sally Thibodeau and Judy Gilroy, as well as his affectionate dog Penny.
