Oliver” Scott” Deffenbaugh, 93, of Lanexa, VA, on July 17, 2026, while in hospice care at his beloved home overlooking the Chickahominy River, was peacefully called to be at one with Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Bedford Oliver and Cecil Henry Deffenbaugh; his wife of 61 years, Jean McLaughlin Deffenbaugh; and his sister, Eileen Nickel.
He is survived by his sons, Mark Deffenbaugh and his wife, Leisa, and their children, Hannah Burton and Reade Deffenbaugh; and Scott Deffenbaugh and his wife, Cindy. He is also survived by his brother, Cecil R. Deffenbaugh, his niece, Sherell Nickel Johnson, and his faithful miniature dachshunds, Soupy and Goldie.
He was born in Richmond, VA, and when married, he moved to Mechanicsville. There, with his great ingenuity and resolve, he built his first home and raised his family. He later built a second home overlooking the Chickahominy River. Scott loved being surrounded by people living life joyfully. That home became a nexus for family and friends to fish, swim, waterski and dirt bike ride–generating years of wonderful memories through which he will be fondly remembered. It later became a tranquil place to view the beauty and activity of the river through the seasons.
For those who knew him, they will have heard him say, “Remember these five words: Jesus come into my heart.” Opening our hearts to love would be his message for those learning of his death and his final act of devotion in his personal ministry.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Debra, Casey, Trish, and Tracy who provided excellent care for him in recent months and to Bob Lucy, Ana and Steve Maya Adkins, and his many other friends who provided emotional care and comfort not only to Scott but also to the family as we cared for him during his final journey home.
The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Thursday July 23rd at Vincent Funeral Home in Providence Forge, VA. A funeral service will be held Friday 10am July 24th at Vincent Funeral Home. Burial will be 12 Noon Friday, in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond VA.
