Irmgard Rosa Rickard (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Irmgard Rosa Rickard, lovingly known as Irma and cherished as “Oma” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, in Newport News, VA, at the age of 89.

Born on September 21, 1936, in the picturesque town of Rodalben, Germany, Irma’s life was a tapestry of love, service, and creativity.

A devoted homemaker, Irma poured her heart into crafting a warm and welcoming home for her family. Her artistic flair shone through in her love for crafting, ceramics, and crocheting, where she created beautiful Christmas ornaments treasured by many. Her garden was a labor of love, blooming with vibrant flowers that reflected her nurturing spirit.

After raising her six children, Irma and her husband, James Rickard, embarked on numerous adventures, traveling to new destinations and savoring life’s experiences together. Their love story spanned 69 wonderful years, a testament to their unwavering commitment and companionship.

Irma’s compassion knew no bounds. She made sandwiches and delivered them to patients at the VA Hospital, offering kindness and comfort to those in need. Her one-day bus trips to Dover Downs Casino in Delaware were filled with laughter and joy, creating lasting memories with friends.

An active member of her community, Irma graced the Red Hat Society, American Legion 368, DAV Chapter 2, VFW 6002, Retired Military Wives Club, and Purple Heart Association with her vibrant presence. She held the esteemed position of President in the Ladies Auxiliary for the American Legion, DAV, and VFW, leading with grace and dedication.

Irma was preceded in death by her parents, Luitpold and Rosa Hauck, her sister Anni, and her brother Jurgen.

She is survived by her beloved husband, James Rickard; her loving children, Winfried Rickard (Roxanne), Debbie Buvel (Dave), Terry Rickard (Phyllis), Renee Emery (Neal), Curtis Rickard (Bonnie), and Carleen Hickey (Chris); her daughter-in-love, Alice Rickard; and her cherished grandchildren, David Buvel, Shannon Polston (Mike), Jason Rickard (Christie), Stephanie Hoffman (Hans), Brandon Downs, Dakota Emery, Jillian Hickey, and Allison Hickey. Oma also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, her dearest friend Hedy Tomson, and a host of dear friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts. We would like to thank the team at Amedisys Hospice Care for providing comfort and dignity to Irma during her last weeks, especially Robert, Judy, Tiffany, Natalie and Deb.
