Donald J. Progar, 89, of Yorktown

Donald J. Progar (Amory Funeral Home)

Donald J. Progar, 89, passed away July 2, 2026, surrounded by his wife and children.

Born August 14, 1936 in St. Michael, Pennsylvania; son of Michael and Elizabeth (Roeder) Progar. Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Paul, William, Edward, Henry, Andy, Louis, and Mickey; and sisters, Rose Marie Myers and Elizabeth Osman.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joan (Zombeck) Progar, whom he married January 24,1959, after a six-year courtship. Don is also survived by his children; Brad, married to Robyn (Holt), Yorktown, VA; Cindee Progar, North, VA; Gina, married to Ted Choma, Columbia, MO; and Dawn Marie, married to Matt Luckman, Columbia, PA. Don was also blessed with nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who visited him often.

After graduating from Adams Township High School, he attended Emory and Henry University as a scholar and student-athlete (football) where he earned degrees in both math and chemistry. Immediately upon graduating he and his new bride (Joan) moved to Hampton, Virginia, where he would start his 40-year career at NASA. As a chemist, then a space technician, and nologist for NASA, his sharp intellect, exacting precision, and calm demeanor earned him a strong reputation among his peers. Don’s efforts led to dozens of scientific papers and numerous journal publications, as well as several patents recorded in his name.

Don was a fun-loving, kind, quiet, thoughtful man who was generous with his time and talent. Don was known to keep a plentiful garden, a tidy yard, and an impeccable home. Fastidious with his appearance, Don always had polish on his shoes and a shine on his cars, which were always beauties. He was fair, but ruthless, at board and card games, a whiz on the dance floor, and a maestro on the accordion. His family cherishes the many beautiful paintings and stained glass pieces he completed over the decades he honed his art.

The family welcomes attendance to his visitation and service at Amory Funeral Home in Yorktown, VA on Wednesday July 8, 2026 at 12:30 and 1:30, respectively. Don will be laid to rest at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations in Don‘s name to the charity of your choice.
