A Time to Learn
Ruth attended Charles City Public Schools and graduated from Ruthville High School, where she was Valedictorian of her class. In 1946, she attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and Virginia Commonwealth University. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Education degrees. She did further studies at the University of Virginia. She was listed in the “Who’s Who in America.”

She served as Vacation Bible School Principal, Sunday School Tracher, and Musician for over 40 years. She was a member of the NAACP, the Civic League, Advisory Council for the Richard M. Bowman History Center, the Heritage Library Board, Committee on Aging, VCU Alumni Association, Ruthville High School Alumni Association, Charles City/New Kent Retired Teacher’s Association, and the Young At Heart Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Sanford G. Christian; her parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
Ruth leaves to cherish her memory, two loving daughters, Vivian Garlene Young, and Cheryl Buchanan; grandchildren, Shafnee, Ernest, Christian, and Jordan; great grandchildren, C’era, Alexis, L.C., and Tristian; three great great grandchildren, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
