Joseph “Sonny” Winfred Freeman, Jr, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 11, 1939, in Princess Anne County, VA.
Sonny spent most of his life in Creeds, for four years, he served in the Army in Korea. After his time in Korea, he returned to Creeds where he farmed his families land for the next 62 years. His passions in life were serving the Lord, his family, farming, duck hunting, and woodworking.
Sonny was a quiet soul, kind, loving and forgiving. He served as an elder of the Church of Christ at Creeds for many years. He loved his church family, teaching Sunday School, making wood crafts for the youth during Vacation Bible Schools, and helping others. He will be remembered for his love of God and family.
He is predeceased in death by his first wife, Mary Estelle Freeman; sister, Mildred Ansell; parents, Joseph and Edna Freeman; and granddaughter, Charlie Ann Freeman.
He is survived by his wife, Martha. His legacy will continue through his children: Wendy Sue Woolard and husband, Jeff; Joseph Kevin Freeman and wife, Rebecca; and Jon-Michael Freeman and wife, Jenifer; nine grandchildren, Kala Lynn Woolard, Brooke Elizabeth Barnett, Dylan O’Neal Woolard, Amy Hart Mullins, Patrick Wayne Hart, Joseph Harrison Freeman, Jack Kevin Freeman, Amberly Hope Freeman, and Ashlyn Estelle Freeman; great-grandchildren, Makenzie Estelle Barnett, Mason Scott, Barnett, Holden O’Neal Woolard, Charlotte Bay Woolard and Thomas Richard Paur.
He loved every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. Each member of his family holds near to their heart’s the memories, love, and wisdom he imparted throughout his life.
