Anita Dawn Freeman Laxton, affectionately known as Nina, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 15, 2026, at her home in Ahoskie, North Carolina.

Born on August 8, 1974, in Hampton, Virginia, she was 51 years old. Nina was a beloved daughter of Cynthia Morse Jenkins and the late Francis Scott Freeman. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, that lit up any room with her incredible smile. She is deeply mourned by her family and friends who cherished her vibrant spirit and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

In her professional life, Nina worked diligently as an administrative assistant in accounting. Outside of work, she found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including her love for the beach and all things nautical. She had a special fondness for lighthouses, perhaps drawn to their steadfast protection against the waves—much like the way she watched over her own family.

Nothing brought more happiness to Nina’s heart than her family. Her granddaughter, Stella Rae Cowan, was the apple of her eye, and she adored her children deeply. She took great pride and joy in being a ;ball mom; always present at every game to cheer on her children, Baylee and Caden, with boundless enthusiasm. Nina’s love extended to her morning coffee rituals, where she found quiet moments of reflection. She had a lifelong passion for dancing, embracing each step with grace and joy.

Preceded in death by her father, Francis Scott Freeman, her Aunt Day, and her nephew, Shawn, Nina’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

She is survived by her loving mother, Cynthia, of Ahoskie; her devoted daughter, Baylee Laxton Cowan and husband Slade of Ahoskie; her cherished son, Caden Blaise Laxton of Hampton, VA; and her precious granddaughter, Stella Rae Cowan. Nina is also survived by her brothers, Brian Scott Freeman of Orlando, FL; David Adam Freeman and wife Brittany Nicole of Ahoskie; and Joseph Shane Freeman of Gloucester, VA. Her mother-in-law, Nancy Laxton of Hampton, VA, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, will all miss her dearly.

Nina’s legacy of love and laughter will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who knew her.
