Robert Richard “Bob” O’Hara, SFC, U.S. Army, Ret., departed this world on May 2, 2026, in Newport News, VA. Born on July 21, 1948, in Groton, New York, Bob lived a life filled with service, adventure, and love, reaching the age of 77 at the time of his passing.
Bob proudly served in the Army as a Military Police Officer, Canine Handler, Kennel Master, Drill Instructor, Recruiter and was a Vietnam Veteran. He retired as a Sergeant First Class after 20 years and earned numerous awards and decorations.
After his service in the Army him and his wife retired in Newport News, VA where he worked as a screening supervisor for airport security, armed guard at Newport News Shipbuilding on Navel Nuclear Ships and as Department of the Army police Patrol Sergeant until his retirement.
Beyond his professional life, Bob was a man of many passions. As an avid collector of Pez candy dispensers, he cherished the joy such simple treasures brought. He shared a love for travel, often setting sail on cruises alongside his beloved wife, Linda, who he met while stationed at his first Stateside assignment in Maryland on a blind date ice skating—a story he loved to tell, often quipping that Linda’s playful push on the ice led him to fall in love.
Bob’s adventurous spirit took him to Germany, where he enjoyed Volksmarching, capturing the beauty of the world through his lens as an enthusiastic photographer. His love for animals and talent as a handyman reflected his generous spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A devoted family man, Bob shared 55 cherished years with his loving wife, Linda. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Jennifer O’Hara and Tim O’Hara (Nikki), who blessed them with two grandchildren, Elizabeth Snyder and Marty Snyder. Bob’s legacy of love and kindness will forever endure in their hearts.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Joseph O’Hara, Jr. and Margaret Elnora O’Hara (Sheridan), and his brother, Eddie O’Hara. He leaves behind a large, loving family including his siblings Tommy, Mary, Barb, Mike, Charlie, Martin, Chris, and Terese, along with a host of dear extended family and friends whose lives he touched.
Bob O’Hara will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date, a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, love, and joy. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of the importance of kindness, laughter, and living life fully.
