David “Pop” Borntrager, 87, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on April 30, 2026.
Born on February 5, 1939, in Hartville, Ohio, David was the son of the late Abner and Fanny Borntrager. On May 20, 1957, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Parker, and together they built nearly 69 years of devotion, partnership, and family.
David proudly served his country in the United States Navy, completing two tours in the Vietnam War. He retired in 1974 as a USN HMC Chief Corpsman—an achievement that reflected his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to those he served alongside.
After his military service, David continued his life of contribution through his work in Civil Service at Fort Story until his retirement. He was also a proud member of the Norview #113 and Kempsville #196 Masonic Lodges.
Above all, David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His greatest joy came from time spent with his family. He loved fishing, cooking weekend breakfasts, and cheering on his favorite football and NASCAR teams. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and his readiness to help anyone in need.
David is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; daughters Beth Banton (Roger), Barbara Hall-Simpson, Shelly Ripa (Perry); and son David P. Borntrager. He was blessed with grandchildren Heather Spencer, John Stoneberger Jr., Marie Blumenberg, Kerstin Bettioui, Vanessa Borntrager, Naomi Dobler, Kelsey Ripa, Faith Woodward, and Riley Ripa, as well as 13 great-grandchildren who brought him endless pride and happiness.
A visitation will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel on Saturday, May 9, from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life with military honors to honor David’s service in the U.S. Navy. Burial will take place at Albert G Horton Jr Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wounded Warriors Project in David’s honor.
