Marilyn Horsley Avis (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

Marilyn Horsley Avis, 73, of Newport News, VA, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026. She was a beloved mother, adored wife to a husband that preceded her and a cherished friend to many in her circle.

Marilyn was born in Newport News, VA to Marion and Exedell Horsley. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975. She worked for the Newport News Public Schools as a dedicated elementary school teacher for her entire career. She was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Hampton, VA where she often served many roles and enjoyed being part of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a passionate member of the local Alpha Delta Kappa sorority that promoted women’s commitment to educational excellence, for personal and professional growth.

Marilyn loved being around people, so she was always the first to volunteer to manage the phone tree and help coordinate social events for any organization she joined. One of her favorite activities was spending Wednesday nights at the church for Welcome Table, where she helped prepare dinner for anyone in the community who needed a warm meal and a welcoming place to be. Marilyn also enjoyed trips with her family to the beach and lake, cruises, visiting extended family, and reading in her free time. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family; she was fiercely proud of her son, Phillip, and deeply valued the life she and Totten built together, surrounded by those they loved. Marilyn was known for her outgoing, warm nature, her bubbly laughter, and her radiant smile.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Totten Avis and her brother, Clifton Horsley. She is survived by her son, Phillip, and his wife, Kelsey; her sister, Nell Johnson, and her husband, Eddie Johnson and a beloved extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Hampton, VA (1458 Todds Lane) with reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Hampton, VA.
