Joseph EJ Wheeler, aged 87, of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026. Born on November 28, 1938, in West Helena, Arkansas, Joseph lived a full and vibrant life, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and cherished memories.
Joseph’s journey through life was one characterized by dedication and warmth. He devoted his career to working as an automotive mechanic, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his craft and a determination to solve any problem that came his way. His hands were the tools with which he built not only machines but lasting friendships and a strong community.
Outside of his work, Joseph found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether playing bingo, riding his bicycle through the neighborhood, or getting lost in the vibrant colors of his drawings, Joseph embraced every moment with enthusiasm. His fondness for classic John Wayne westerns was well-known, and he often shared these timeless tales with family and friends, bonding over stories of courage and adventure.
Joseph was a proud Mason, valuing the principles of brotherhood and service. His faith and values were guiding lights in his life, influencing his actions and inspiring those around him.
Preceded in death by his father, Comer Wheeler; his sister, Melvinie; and his ex-wife, Lillie, Joseph is now reunited with them in peace.
He is survived by a loving family who continues to carry forward his spirit: his sons, Joseph Wheeler and Joseph W. Wheeler; his daughter, Barbara (Wheeler) Gilbert; his granddaughter, Aundria Wheeler his grandsons, Justin Gilbert and Bryan Gilbert and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of his heart, ensuring that his legacy lives on.
Though he is no longer with us, Joseph EJ Wheeler’s spirit endures in the hearts of all who knew him. He taught us that life’s true joys are found in simple moments and meaningful connections, leaving us all inspired to live with kindness and integrity.
