Eliabeth Lois Kephart Purdue, age 82 of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away April 18, 2026, after a long courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She faced her illness with quiet strength and unwavering grace, surrounded by the love of her family.
Elizabeth was born in Woodland, California, on November 29, 1943, to the late James F. Kephart and Elizabeth L. Pinola. Elizabeth grew up with a deep sense of family, heritage, and resilience. She was a proud Elder of the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians, carrying forward the traditions, values, and cultural strength of her people. Her connection to her ancestry was a source of pride, grounding, and identity throughout her life.
She found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Elizabeth loved soaking up the sun and swimming, finding peace and happiness in the warmth of the outdoors. She enjoyed watching old Western television shows and never missed the chance to enjoy a Johnny Depp movie. She also cherished traditional Native arts, spending countless hours basket weaving, beading, and working with leather – practices that connected her to her culture and allowed her to create beauty with her hands.
Elizabeth was a devoted mother and grandmother, raising her children with unwavering love and dedication. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense happiness. For more than 30 years, Elizabeth dedicated herself as a caregiver to her grandchildren. She was a constant presence in their lives – offering love, stability, guidance, and the kind of unwavering support that shaped them into who they are today.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Earl R. Purdue, and by her siblings, Marva Sheard, Willard Sheard, Grace Pike, and Michael Kephart. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
She is survived by her loving children, Samantha, John, Angel, Lisa, Cantreece and Rachelle; her cherished grandchildren, Rita, Johnny, Josh, Albert, Timothy, Brian, Tayler, Selena, Marley, Cheyenne; and her beloved great grandchildren, Ryker, Sherry, Kobe, Jurnee, Bowie, Jordan, and Violet.
Elizabeth has built a life rooted in care, dedication, and quiet strength. Whether offering guidance, sharing stories, or simply being a comforting presence, Elizabeth touched the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and in the countless memories they will carry forward.
