Cornell Von Proby, Sr., a dedicated Marine and cherished family man, passed away on April 18, 2026, in Newport News at the age of 59.
Born on February 11, 1967, in the heart of Florence, Alabama, Cornell lived a life marked by service, devotion, and an enduring love for his family and passions.
Cornell’s professional journey was distinguished by his role as a Training Analyst with the United States Government. His career was further defined by his esteemed service as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, where he earned numerous commendations and medals. Among these were the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with five stars, Combat Action Ribbon with one star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, to name a few. His service extended across notable campaigns and conflicts, reflecting his unwavering commitment to his country.
An avid football fan, Cornell treasured his time watching the Detroit Lions, sharing in their triumphs and tribulations with fervor. Outside of the gridiron, he found solace and joy in the great outdoors, with a particular fondness for hunting and fishing.
Cornell was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Lora Deneen Proby. He leaves behind a loving family, including his father, Charles Barry Hough; his mother, Ethel Lee Proby; his son, Cornell Von Proby, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Molly Proby; his daughters, Camille Michelle Proby, Adriana Maria Giacomina Marinello, and Giuliana Maria Jessica Marinello. He is also survived by his sister, Nicolette Proby, and brother-in-law, Clifford Witherspoon. Cornell’s legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Maya Proby and Candace Proby, who will carry forward the values and love he imparted.
Cornell Von Proby, Sr. will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to both family and country, and for the warmth and strength he shared with all who knew him. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will endure in the hearts of his loved ones.
