Robert Allen Chipley, 85, of Williamsburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026. He was born on November 5, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Prentice Fulton Chipley and Thelma Teson Chipley, and was one of nine children.
Robert lived a life defined by curiosity, service, and an extraordinary ability to fix just about anything. A man of many talents, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 to 1967, attaining the rank of Specialist Fifth Class. During his service, the Army valued his exceptional skills in telecommunications and equipment repair. While stationed in Korea, Robert received an Achievement Award for his instrumental role in helping construct a convent for the Holy Family Order of Nuns. Through his initiative in gathering additional donations, the project expanded to include an orphanage and ultimately a hospital on South Mountain in Seoul—an enduring legacy of compassion and determination.
After returning to the United States, Robert contributed to the construction of the Pentagon’s communications center, worked with the Army Security Agency, and maintained critical IRS document equipment. Following his marriage to Johanna Zeiler Chipley, he transitioned to civilian life in 1967 and began a highly accomplished engineering career.
Robert was a skilled machinist and mechanical engineer, working for United Technologies, Honeywell, and Northrop on advanced aeronautical projects. Among his proudest professional achievements was his work on the Ring Laser Gyroscope, a vital component used in aircraft guidance systems, including those of the Apollo Space Program and commercial passenger aircraft.
Never one to stand still, Robert later became a successful small business owner, operating Central Wine & Spirits in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Even in retirement, he continued to work and connect with others—making truck deliveries for ITS, where he formed many lasting friendships, and working in tool rental at Home Depot, where he was well known for his knowledge and practical wisdom.
Robert was deeply involved in his faith communities, serving as an usher and caretaker at St. John’s Catholic Church in Dayton, Minnesota, and later at St. Denis Catholic Church in Westwood, Massachusetts, where he and Johanna lived with their family for 18 years. He was also an active member of the Westwood High School Band Parents Association, supporting the marching band with pride.
Known lovingly as “Pop,” Robert cherished staying busy. He enjoyed fishing but was happiest when helping others—repairing small engines, electronics, furniture, toys, picture frames, and anything else that needed attention. He loved tinkering in his barn with Buddy, maintaining and improving his home, and growing beautiful flowers for Johanna.
Robert is reunited in death with his beloved wife of 55 years, Johanna Zeiler Chipley, who passed in 2022. He is survived by his daughters: Tristan Bowen and her husband Mike, Colonie Petrus and her husband Marc, Erin Melton and her husband Jake, and Noble Farrow and her husband Chad. He was a devoted grandfather—known proudly as “Pop”—to Kayley Bowen Moses (Brendan), Colleen Bowen, Ivie Petrus Lee (Peter), Dayton Petrus (Mitchell Sasser), Wyley Petrus, Ashton Melton (Maggie), Makyle Melton, Carson Melton, Kieran Farrow, and Acelyn Farrow, and a cherished great-grandfather to Robert “Bobby” Moses, Silas Lee, and Charlotte Melton.
Robert Allen Chipley will be remembered for his ingenuity, generosity, quiet dedication, and the countless ways he made life better for those around him. His legacy lives on in the projects he built, the people he helped, and the family he loved so deeply.
