It is with deep sorrow, but also profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the passing of Donald Bowen Zarn, who departed from this world on December 28, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on July 28, 1936, in Norfolk, Virginia, Donald’s journey through life was marked by love, adventure, and dedication.
Donald was a man who turned his dreams into reality. He founded and successfully ran his own mortgage company, dedicating his career to helping others achieve their dream of homeownership.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Donald nourished a passion for exploration. He traveled extensively, immersing himself in diverse cultures and perspectives. His time living in Spain was particularly cherished, leaving an indelible mark on his heart and igniting a lifelong love for the vibrant tapestry of our world.
Family was at the core of Donald’s being. He treasured moments shared with loved ones, often gathering with them for delightful outdoor cookouts featuring his favorite—a bushel of crabs. His warmth and laughter surrounded these gatherings, creating memories that will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate to join him.
Donald was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert and Victoria Zarn, and his dear son, Claude “Mackey” McCallum Zarn. He is survived by a loving family who will carry forth his legacy: his children, Carter Zarn Overton; Elizabeth Zarn Drew and her husband Leo; and Bowen Scott Zarn and his wife Patricia. His grandchildren, Jessica, Aubrey, Adam, Evan, Ashley, Taylor, Zoe, Madisson, and Cabot, along with his great-grandchildren, Abigail, Hayden, Morgan, Leighton, Vaughn, Victoria, Logan, Mason, Nathan, Olivia, Landon, Kinsley, and Beckham, were the pride and joy of his life. Donald is also survived by his siblings, Jean Hall, Mary Louise O’Neal, and Robert Adam Zarn.
A Memorial Mass to honor Donald Bowen Zarn will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 11 a.m., at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Donald’s life and the indelible impact he had on those around him.
Donald Bowen Zarn leaves behind a legacy of love, exploration, and the unyielding importance of family. Though he has left this world, the light he brought into the lives of those who knew him shines on.
