Alice Lorraine Cooke Washington was born on September 19, 1925 to the late James Washington and Bertha Perkins Cooke. She departed this life at the home of her niece on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Alice was born and raised in Hornsbyville, Virginia and was educated in the York County School System. She graduated from York County Training School in 1941 and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in 1946.
Alice confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Grafton Baptist Church – Harris Grove. She attended church faithfully until her health failed. She served as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, Organist, Deaconess, Missionary and in many other areas of the church, the last being Mother of the Church.
On January 3, 1947 Alice married James T. Washington. There union was not blessed with children, but they enjoyed their many nieces and nephews.
Alice taught music at Douglas High School, Upper Marlboro, Maryland for two years. Alice left the teaching profession to become a civil service employee with the Federal Government. Alice retired after 31 years of civil service for the Department of the Army at Fort Eustis in 1980, having achieved the position of Supply Division Commodity Officer.
Alice leaves to cherish her memories: niece and caregiver, Marilyn C. Moore (Wayne) of Williamsburg, Virginia, great nephew, James A. Cooke, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia and great niece Jewel A. Cooke of Yorktown, Virginia, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
