Vivian Hodges Hutchison passed away peacefully at her home on April 12, 2025, at the age of 99. A proud native of Arlington, Virginia, Vivian was born on November 17, 1925, to the late Benjamin and May Hodges.
Vivian began her professional life working for the FBI during World War II before choosing to dedicate herself full-time to raising her beloved daughter, Janis. Once Janis was grown, Vivian rejoined the workforce and later retired as an insurance clerk/receptionist from a local doctor’s office—where her warm personality and welcoming smile were cherished by patients and colleagues alike.
During her many years in the Arlington area, Vivian was a faithful, charter member of Little Falls Presbyterian Church and a devoted volunteer at Arlington Hospital. She and her husband also enjoyed many trips with friends and with colleagues from his Kiwanis Club. Vivian’s spirit of service and community remained strong throughout her life, including her later years as an active member and volunteer at the Greenspring Senior Living community. After moving to Atlantic Shores in Virginia Beach, she continued to embrace life with energy, independence, and joy.
Vivian was known for her nurturing nature, acceptance of others, and deep sense of self-reliance. She valued the ability to live independently and took pride in staying active—often walking three times a day. She strongly believed that walking was the key to her long, healthy life and was even able to walk some the day before she died.
In addition to her parents, Vivian was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-one years, Robert Morris Hutchison, as well as her sisters, Peggy Shilling and Anne Teschendorf, and nephew Andy Oliver.
She is survived by her devoted daughter, Janis Kirkland, Esq., and her son-in-law, Dr. C. Stokes Kirkland, Jr.; her wonderful grandchildren, Kristin Shepherd (Peter) and Dr. David Kirkland (Courtney); her treasured great-grandchildren, Isabel Shepherd, Madeline Kirkland, and Tucker Kirkland; nieces Laura Woodbury (Parris) and Karen Teschendorf (Jim); nephew Don Oliver; and Andy Oliver’s widow, Kristin Oliver.
Vivian’s life will be honored with a burial service at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at National Memorial Park Cemetery in Falls Church, Virginia.
Vivian will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and the legacy of love she leaves behind in her family.
