Barbara Wilsher Tyree, 82, of Chesapeake Virginia passed away Tuesday March 4, 2025 after a long battle with breast cancer.
Born November 3, 1942 in Lynchburg Virginia, she was the daughter of J. Edwin Wilsher and Katherine Campbell Wilsher. She is survived by her husband, Leslie L. Tyree; one daughter, Katherine Tyree Ford and her husband, Frank Ford; and grandson, Benjamin Tyree Ford.
Barbara attended Amherst County schools, graduating in 1961 with a desire to become a teacher. Barbara and Les were married June 9, 1962. She graduated from Longwood in 1964, and first taught in Henrico County 1964-1965, and Amherst County 1965-1970. Returning to Henrico County, she taught at Baker Elementary from 1970-1978. In 1978 she taught at the opening of Donahoe Elementary in Henrico.
Barbara earned her master’s degree with honors from Virginia Commonwealth University in Elementary School Administration in 1982. Teaching 5th grade was her favorite class. She was assigned as a resource teacher in later years at Donahoe. Barbara is remembered by many of her students for the innovative classroom management and teaching techniques with her students. Barbara and her husband, Les, taught together at Donahoe Elementary for many years.
In 2000 they both retired from teaching and enjoyed traveling. In 2005 after discovering her first cancer diagnosis they moved to Florida, spending winters there, and summers in Virginia and North Carolina.
