It is with great sadness that the family of Norma Anne Wright Sims announces her passing on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. She was born in Danville, Kentucky, the daughter of Joyce Marie Phillips and Kenneth Dale Wright.
Norma taught Special Education and Physical Education for the York County School System. She coached both girls’ tennis and cross-country teams for Tabb and Grafton High School. Norma was an avid tennis player and a member of Hilton Tennis Club in Newport News for many years. Her other hobbies included maintaining a beautiful flower garden, sewing and quilting.
Norma was very fortunate to have loving and caring grandparents. Her maternal grandparents, Raymond and Nannie Phillips, from Junction City, Kentucky, raised her from age 6 to adulthood. Her paternal grandmother, Ruby Woford Wright (Mammaw), of Danville, Kentucky provided loving guidance throughout Norma’s youth. The love that her grandparents provided was instrumental in making her the wonderful person we all knew and loved. Norma was very grateful for her stepmother, Norma Jean Wright Young, who was responsible for creating a close relationship with her half-sisters and keeping the family together.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Joyce. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Daniel Sims; son, Andrew (Alisa) Sims of Forestville, Virginia; daughter, Elizabeth (Justin) Arrington of Chesapeake, Virginia; granddaughters, Leah (12), Annalee (11); grandson, Grant (9); brother, Kenneth Dale Wright, Jr. (Vickie) and sisters, Kimberly Ann Reitz (Steve) and Denise Lynn Brown.
The family kindly requests that, instead of sending flowers, donations be made to the charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at Weymouth Funeral Home.
