Margaret Bonday Powell, 97, died peacefully at her home in Williamsburg, VA on January 12, 2025.
Born in Baltimore, MD, Margie was raised in Hampton and Newport News, VA. She graduated from St. Vincent De Paul High School. After attending St. Mary’s College of Notre-Dame, she taught elementary school until she married Lt. Edwin H. Powell of South Hill, VA.
Inspired by her time living in Okinawa, Japan and traveling abroad, Margie cultivated an interest in art, particularly oriental art. Her experiences broadened her interest in and support of other art forms, leading Margie to become a volunteer at Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News.
Margie and Ed eventually retired to Williamsburg, VA. There Margie became active in her neighborhood: playing bridge weekly, participating in the garden club, and enjoying evening walks with her husband.
A caring and supportive mother, Margie encouraged and modeled compassion, tolerance, and love in her children. She kept laughter in the house along with many beloved childhood pets.
Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents, Elizabeth and John Bonday and her brother, Thomas Bonday. She is survived by her son, Charles Powell (Susan Petriella); her daughters, Suzanne Powell (Dan Spaeth), Lisa Powell, and Ellen Powell McFarland (Glen); her grandson, Dominic Rocco Corbisello; and her sisters, Gwendolyn Howe and Victoria McCormick-Goodhart.
A private remembrance will be held at her home.
