Richard “Dick” Elton Whanger, 82, of Newport News

Richard “Dick” Elton Whanger (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

Richard Elton Whanger, “Dick”, 82, passed away at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. He was born in Fayetteville, WV to Beatrice and Alva Whanger.

Dick met his wife, Donna, at Denbigh High School. They were teachers who fell in love. Dick and Donna cherished each other and their son, Ben.

When Ben was diagnosed with cancer, Dick fought to have Ben participate in a clinical trial to have a port-a-cath placed. Dick wanted to make sure Ben could enjoy every minute of his life and not let cancer hinder him. He especially didn’t want Ben to miss out on his time at their second home in the Outer Banks. It was a place he loved dearly; his happy place. Dick and his brother, Tom both purchased lots next to each other and built homes where the families still vacation.

He went on to teach at Point Option and made a profound impact on his students. Many of his students and colleagues kept in touch with him over the years and every time they spoke to each other, Dick would light up with delight.

Dick loved everything WV, especially the WVU Mountaineers. He religiously kept up with the stats of the basketball and football teams and was so proud of his Alma mater. He and Ben would swap stories and opinions and always end the conversation with I love you.

In recent years you could find Dick watching sports, talking with friends and listening to classical music on the radio. He always had the best stories and loved to reminisce. A caring gentleman, loving father and husband, proud of his WV roots, amazing storyteller, sports fan and influential teacher and mentor. Dick, we raise a gin and tonic in your memory!

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sara Capodilupo; his sister-in-law, Joan Whanger; his brothers-in-law, Michael Foushee and Bill Parrish; and his nephew, Eric Neal. He is survived by his wife, Donna; his son, Benjamin (Blaire); his brother, Tom Whanger; his sister, Jan Neal; his grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements for a Celebration of Life will be announced after the holidays. Friends and family may reach out to share memories by contacting Ben at [email protected].

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to VCU Children’s Hospital Foundation in honor of Benjamin Whanger.
