Ruby Mae Spady Bunn is with Jesus. He kept his promise to her and took her home, Thursday, September 26, 2024. She was 98 and ten months old.
She was a lifelong resident of Newport News, a graduate of Newport News High School and Old Dominion University. She was a teacher in Newport News Public Schools for twenty-nine years. At her retirement, the superintendent further testified that she was a master teacher. She taught women in the Maggie Roaten Sunday school class, Orcutt “Avenue” Baptist Church for fifty-five years. At her retirement celebration, were granddaughters of women she had taught in the beginning.
She belonged to the Junior Women’s Club of Warwick as the Chairperson of the Special Projects Committee; she was a pioneer on the Peninsula on raising public awareness of special needs children.
Family filled the deep of her heart: Whether buying matching dresses for twin granddaughters or sending birthday checks to triplet great-grandsons, she loved her family in word and deed.
For seventy-one years, family tradition was to gather at her home, where she lived for eighty-two years, for Christmas eve dinner, devotions, carols and gifts. Whether as Mama, Granny, GG, The Queen, Gracie, her family spoke to her with abiding love and affection.
Mrs. Bunn was preceded in death by her dearly loved parents, John Wesley and Georgianna Turner Spady; the love of her life, husband, Raymond Winston Bunn, Sr.; two brothers, George Wesley and Robert Spady and sisters-in-law, sister by choice, Mary Louise Phillips Spady.
Left to cherish and remember her are her sons, Raymond Winston Bunn, Jr. and Robert Wilton Bunn; three grandchildren, Robert Wilton Bunn (Ginger Warner Bunn) Traci Leigh Bunn Powers (Dr. Bruce P. Powers) and Lori Ann Bunn Janke (Tobias Janke), seven greatgrandchildren, Ann Elizabeth Powers, Abby Elise Powers, Brett Joseph Powers, Liam Christof Erich Janke, Charles Raymond Bunn, Winston Robert Bunn, Wesley James Bunn; nieces and nephews.
The family acknowledged with deepest and most sincere gratitude to Gentiva Hospice of Petersburg, Angie, Tawyana, Mary, Connie, Johnette and compassionate sitters, Madeline Boyd, Joyce Harris, Patricia Peterson, Brittany Harris and the loving care of the Clarksbury Fellowship.
Worship of gratitude to God and for her life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 5, 2:00 p.m. at Orcutt Baptist Church with fellowship to follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. A private Graveside Service will be held for the family. Instead of Flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clarksbury Fellowship Card Ministry, Clarksbury greetings, P.O. Raymond and Bob grew up hearing their dad, Winston, say “Boys, your Mother is a lady!”
