Sheila Carpenter Grizzle Risley, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, was received into her heavenly home on Thursday, July 25, in Richmond, VA. Born on September 24, 1952, in Rocky Mount, NC, Sheila’s life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love.

Sheila graduated from Northern Nash High School in 1970 and went on to study accounting at Cape Fear Community College. Her career as an accountant at Cape Fear Community College spanned from 1972 until her retirement, showcasing her commitment to her profession and the community she served.

Sheila’s journey through life took her to Wilmington, NC, Castle Hayne, NC, Carolina Beach, NC, and New Kent, VA. In each place, she made lasting friendships and left a mark of grace and warmth.

Sheila was preceded in death by her father, Joseph David Carpenter, her mother, Pauline Carpenter Bissette, her beloved granddaughter, Kristen Grizzle, and her brother, Rev. Ronald Wayne Carpenter. Her memory will continue to be cherished by her two devoted sons, Hubert Sanford “Sandy” Grizzle III and Joseph Brandon Grizzle, her adored granddaughter, Selina Grizzle Prince, and her two cherished grandsons, Joseph Grizzle and Jaxson Grizzle. She also leaves behind her former husband, Hubert Sanford Grizzle II, the father of her children, a sister-n-law Nan Hale Carpenter and Candace Bradley and Thomas Preston Bradley, with whom she has lived in Virginia for the last decade.

Sheila’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family and friends. Her gentle spirit, loving nature, and bright smile will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Sheila had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, and shared a special bond with her dog, “Lil Bit,” in her later years.

In remembrance of Sheila, the family requests that donations be made to the New Kent County Animal Shelter, reflecting her lifelong dedication to helping others and her love for animals.

Rest in peace, Sheila. Your love and light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.
