John Franklin Green, Jr. (Weymouth Funeral Home & Crematory)

John Franklin Green, Jr. (Frank), 65, passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2024, after a long and valiant fight, following a stroke.

Frank graduated from Tabb High School in 1977 and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a medical corpsman with the Marines. Upon his return home, he joined the York County Sheriff’s Dept where he served for 26 years, achieving the rank of Sargent. It was in this capacity that Frank was shot in the line of duty, remarkably returning after his recovery despite a bullet being permanently lodged in his heart. Following his retirement, Frank continued in service to the community as an employee at Weymouth Funeral Home.

Frank was predeceased by his father and mother, John Franklin Green and Betty Jones Green. He is survived by his wife, Karen German Green; brother, Steven (Tina); brothers-in-law, Randy German (Sharon) and Monte German (Janet); sister-in-law, Kristi Cluverius (Joe); his dear friend, Karen Sparrow: 8 nieces and nephews; 9 great nieces and nephews; many cousins and a huge cadre of friends and fans from his work as a local historian.

Sgt Green was immensely proud of his Dare Roots and was an integral member of the Yorktown Historical Society. He was a sought-after speaker due to his encyclopedic knowledge of Virginia history. Indeed, his knowledge didn’t stop with historical facts as Frank was a serious trivia enthusiast. He savored his victories at Trivia Night and was a tough competitor when it came to Trivial Pursuit! And he maintained his close relationships with his law enforcement brethren, often organizing retiree luncheons.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Providence United Methodist Church, 113 Old Dare Rd., Yorktown, VA 23690. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Expression of sympathy in the form of donations can be made to the Virginia Choral Society or to the ASPCA.
