James L. McMillan, 81, of Virginia Beach

James L. McMillan (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

James Lloyd McMillan, 81, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, at Rosemont Health and Rehabilitation, located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, after a long battle with Cancer.

He was born on May 2, 1942, to M. L. McMillan (Father) and R. O. McMillan (Mother) in Washington D.C. At the time of his death, James was single (and, in his words, “Blissfully Single!”).

He was pre-deceased by his parents, and brothers, Alexander, Robert O., and Daniel B. McMillan.

James is survived by brothers, David W. (Nancy G.), John Stanley, Sr., and Lloyd R. McMillan, and many nephews and nieces as well as many close friends. James was especially fond of those at The Tucker House, located in Norfolk, Virginia, where he lived for many years.

James was an accomplished Master Hair Stylist, serving his clients mostly in the City of Norfolk, Virginia, with brief periods away, to savor the life, work, and of course, the opera and theater in New York City and other locations in California, Florida, and elsewhere.

James had an absolute passion for classical music, the opera, and theater, where he served as a stylist and makeup artist for the many performers at the opera, and the Tidewater Ballet.

James never stayed away for long, but returned “Home” to Tidewater, where his friends, family, and beloved clients lived. He often said, “there’s no place like home” (he gave Credit to Judy Garland for that one).

Family, friends, and others whose lives he touched are invited to The Tucker House Apartments, located at 7700 Armfield Ave., Norfolk, Virginia, 23505, in the Veranda, for a brief Celebration of Life on May 2, 2024, with the time still pending.

Interment will be private at a later date, in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.
