Matthew Scott Butler passed away unexpectedly on March 28, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Matt was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

Left to cherish his memory are wife, Erica Lynne (Hivick) Butler, children, Emily Butler Redding (Alex), Owen Butler, and Bayleigh Butler; grandson, Noah Redding; brother, Leon (Stacey) Butler, sister Angela Butler Nicholson (Darrell); stepfather, Larry Helmick; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also surviving Matt is his loyal companion, Deeks.

Matt was preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Robinson Helmick, and father Duke Butler.

Matt was born on June 5, 1978, in Weston, WV. He enjoyed camping, spending time with his family, and cheering on the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Browns. Matt graduated from Webster County High School in 1996 and from the Newport News Apprentice School, part of Newport News Shipbuilding (a division of Huntington Ingalls Inc.), in December 2002. He graduated with the G. Guy Via Award.

Matt began his career with the Newport News Shipyard on April 7, 2007. He held several positions, ultimately becoming a Construction Supervisor. During his tenure at Newport News Shipyard, Matt received the Model of Excellence Award in 2017, 2021, & 2022. Matt was a wrestling coach for the Newport News Apprentice School from 2001-2011. During this time, they won the Division III National Championship in 2009.

To say he will be missed is an understatement. Matt’s family extends their sincere gratitude for the love and life they shared with him.
