Hertha Marston, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Hertha was born in Vösendorf, Austria. She met her husband John “Jack” Marston while working as an assistant for Jack’s parents, Noel and Dorothea Marston, who were stationed in Vienna, Austria. As the love story goes, Jack, who was stationed in Germany, took some leave to visit his parents. As he knocked on his parent’s door, he was greeted by Hertha. Upon entering, Hertha kindly asked him to take off his shoes. It was love at first sight.
They were married on November 13, 1954 and started their life together in Vienna, Austria. A Dallas Cowboy and New York Yankee fan, Hertha and Jack eventually settled in the Hampton Roads area in 1971. They lived in Newport News, Poquoson, and for the last 20 years they resided in Williamsburg. She worked for SunTrust Bank until retirement. She was on the Board of Directors for Shelton on the Bay and an officer for the Hampton-Mercury Lions Club. Earlier in her life she was an incredibly talented master tailor.
Hertha loved skiing, dancing, music, gardening, travelling and spending time with her granddaughter. She was multi-lingual: German, French, Czech and English. Since 1975, she attended Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Church. She will be missed by her family and her wonderful friends here and in Europe.
Hertha was predeceased in death by her parents, Rudolf and Maria Mayer in Austria. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 69 years, Jack Marston; her son, Shawn Marston; her daughter-in-law, Iveta Marston and her granddaughter, Anna Marston, all residing in Williamsburg.
